What we can and can’t live without in today’s energy-driven world
The planet is running out of fossil fuels and as those non-renewable sources of energy are just that – non-renewable – there will be no more when they’re all gone. Add that to the fact that we’re slowly choking the planet to death with pollution generated from the burning of fossil fuels and we have an energy crisis on our hands. But what can we, as individuals, do about it? Will making changes in our everyday lives really make a difference? If everyone did their part we could collectively make a huge difference to the future of our planet.
Doing your bit doesn’t have to mean making huge life changes or sacrifices either. Simply culling non-essential energy guzzlers can save a huge amount of energy – not to mention money – and the likelihood is you won’t even notice it. We heat and cool our homes to ensure a comfortable temperature year-round, light our rooms with electricity, heat water to wash ourselves, our dishes and our clothes, cook our food using gas or electricity, and power computers, televisions and other appliances. That all uses a lot of energy but most would agree that many of the uses listed are essential. No-one wants to go back to washing our clothes by hand or cooking on a wood-fired stove. So what can we live without?
Tumble driers
Do we really need to dry our clothes in a machine? Simply by hanging our clothes outside to dry, we could save a huge amount of energy. Using the immense (and totally free and clean) power of the sun, clothes could be dry in a matter of hours and have that lovely fresh-air scent. On rainy days, hang your clothes on driers indoors in warm rooms.
Washing clothes in hot water
As much as 85% of the energy a washing machine uses to wash clothes goes towards heating the water. If you have particularly dirty clothes to wash you’ll need to set the machine to a 40℃ wash but for daily washes, cold water is fine. Many machines now have special cold wash settings and powder, liquid and capsules are all adapting to be able to efficiently wash clothes in cold water.
Dishwashers
Before you all scream in despair, I am not suggesting you completely forgo your beloved dishwasher but perhaps use it less and more wisely. When I began to think about what I actually used my microwave for, I realised I really didn’t use it very much. Heating up soup, making porridge, and defrosting frozen meat and seafood when I’ve forgotten to take them out of the freezer in time is about it. All things that could be done by other means. And yet, there it sits plugged into the wall, using energy for no reason at all. My microwave might just be the first to go.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure your all aware of the importance energy conversation for our lives and the well being of our planet. Energy consumption and the efficient use of that energy has been around for decades. I remember as a kid the importance of conserving electricity, insulating your home properly, and turning off lights when your not using them. It’s been preached to us by both governments and parents since we were kids. But now, things are a bit different.
It’s no long just a good idea, but a necessity. The planet can no longer sustain us at the rate were abusing it, and with the already visible effects of global warning, there may be damage already that simply can’t be reversed. So, it’s time to step things up. It’s not just a matter of conversation, and alternative energies anymore. We need to find ways to do things better much better. If your not sure what steps to take, then perhaps an environmental audit is a good idea. It’s no just business that should do them, but everyday consumers as well.
By taking such steps, then you not already educate yourself, but come away with concrete steps to take action that you may have been totally unaware of before. Things like voltage optimization are no longer a mystery to you. It’s time for everyone to take steps. What with all the energy and economic concerns these days, it’s not surprising, that more people are looking for better value for their energy dollars. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense, to no just look at a better price for the current fuel your using. But instead to look at what other options are out there for the average consumer. Because of all the demand for better fuels, the industrial sector has responded, and more and more heating technology is available for the average consumer at more affordable prices.
One of the alternative heating systems that I particularly like, is solar power. And, I’m not the only one. It seems like everyone is considering it. Where I live, there are even government incentive plans to help get started. As anyone who has looked into solar energy, one of the biggest entry hurdles to overcome is the initial price. In the long run, there is a payback, but with high cost for the initial equipment, many consumers are hesitant to jump in. It’s good in this case that the local government has recognized that and is making it easier to get started with solar power.
Another good alternative, is geothermal power. It again is a bit expensive to get started with, but it has the advantage over solar of being always available. Whereas solar and wind power can be dependent on weather conditions, geothermal is always available. It’s pretty hard for weather conditions to affect what’s going on underground. Once you start looking around, what you may find, is that the hard part is narrowing your selection down to which energy choice is best for you. As with all acquisitions, it make sense to do your homework, and understand all the pros and cons of the options you have.
